David Otunga reflects on CM Punk’s pipebomb promo.

On the June 27th, 2011 edition of WWE Monday Night RAW in Las Vegas, CM Punk would sit cross legged on the stage and cut his pipebomb promo on WWE as a whole in a worked shoot promo that has gone down in wrestling history as one of the most famous promos of all time.

While speaking to Insight With Chris Van Vliet in a new interview, David Otunga was asked about the pipebomb promo and if he was paired with Punk at the time, having been part of the New Nexus.

“So this was funny. So like CM Punk is part of New Nexus and McGillicutty, Curtis Axel, Joe Hennig, that was my partner. We used to drive Punk, and so we drove around, we got to know him pretty well. He would talk to us about stuff and sometimes he’d talk about like the office, complain about different things or booking or whatnot. I remember, so the day of the Pipebomb promo, I’m backstage and watching this, he starts talking. I’m like, ‘ooh, ooh, wait a minute. Yo, he’s talking about real stuff here. Like, I don’t know if he should be saying this.’ Like, this is some of the stuff we talked about in the car. I was like, ‘oh man.’ I remember when he walked back to the curtain, he worked me. I went up to him and I was like, ‘hey, Punk man, if I don’t see you again, I just want to tell you it’s been real.’ Because I was like, I know for sure this guy’s fired after this. He’s not coming back, and it was funny because he laughed at me. He’s like, ‘Otunga,’ he’s like, ‘you’ll see me again.’ I don’t know about that. I dapped him up, but I was like, I think this guy is out of here. But yeah, I honestly believe that he that was such a great promo, and he talked about real stuff and then later in the storyline where, yeah, he worked me, man.”

Elsewhere in the same interview, Otunga would note his belief that The Nexus could have been as big as The Shield. You can read more about that here.
