He is best known for his run in WCW during the late '80s and into the mid '90s. He was part of the J-Tex stable alongside Terry Funk and The Great Muta in 1989. The group feuded with top stars Sting and Ric Flair until Slater was fired at the end of 1989. He returned to WCW in 1991, forming a team with Dick Murdoch.

In 1992, Slater and The Barbarian won the United States Tag Team Titles, defeating the Fabulous Freebirds. They are recognized as the final United States Tag Team Champions as the titles became defunct in July 1992.

Slater, teaming with Bunkhouse Buck, won the WCW Tag Team Titles in 1995 from Harlem Heat.

Slater was convicted of stabbing girlfriend Theresa Halbert in June 2004. He was sentenced to one year of house arrest and two years of probation. Slater blamed pain killers for the incident.
