For most professional wrestlers based out of the US, football fandom usually means the NFL and College football, but for some with roots in Mexico and Europe, it means the sport known as soccer in the United States. Now, a current WWE superstar has discussed his love for the spot.
While speaking to Marco Erole in a new interview, Dominik Mysterio was asked about his history with soccer.
“Yeah, yeah, I played football. I’m Mexican, brother. We grew up wrestling and playing soccer. So I was a striker, forward, and I had a good left foot, so sometimes they would put me at center mid. But I was lazy. I didn’t like running back and forth playing center mid. So I like staying up top.”
Mysterio also was asked what player’s shirt he would like to get in the future, naming iconic Italian goalkeeper Gigi Buffon.
“Oh, man. So I feel like I would go with the Italian national. I’d go Gigi Buffon. I’d go Gigi just because I grew up like… I don’t want to say I grew up watching him, but as I was a kid, my whole family loved soccer and football. So for them, watching Italy versus Mexico, it was impossible to score on Gigi Buffon at any point in time. So I feel like that’d be really cool to have a Buffon jersey.”
Elsewhere in another recent interview, Dominik spoke about when he would choose to cash in the Money In The Bank briefcase. You can read more about that here.
