Drake Maverick Says In-Ring Return Came Together In Two Weeks
On August 26, it was announced that Drake Maverick (Rockstar Spud) would be returning to the ring at PROGRESS Wrestling on Spetember 12.
The time of the announcement was about when Maverick found out about his return.
Speaking with Simon Miller, Maverick detailed how his return came together.
“This landed on my lap two weeks ago, 30 minutes before I was going to dinner with my wife for her 40th birthday. Thank you, Renee (Michelle), sorry about dinner. We had a lovely time, but I feel like sometimes, it always tends to happen when it’s something important for Renee, and it gets to me sometimes where it’s like, ‘I’m just going ball something up again.’ It’s like Heat. ‘Don’t be afraid to run away from someone when the heat comes.’ The mob calls you, you look back like [shrugs]. She’s so understanding. It’s great to have an understanding partner who is so supportive.
“I never thought this would happen. This year, I kind of resigned to the fact that I may not wrestle again, so I’m just going to enjoy myself. On the European tours, I was enjoying everywhere we went. I went to the World Cup and was drinking like it was the only time I had been to the World Cup. I was enjoying moments and living, a little too much, and then all of a sudden it drops on you. ‘Two and a half weeks?’ I’m a bit of a stickler for ‘always stay ready’ so if something lands in your lap, it’ll be alright, and luckily for me, it has been. I got into a positive routine and I’ve feeling relatively good. This landing on my lap is a blessing you never thought would happen.”
Maverick competed on two nights of the PROGRESS Odyssey tour, his first matches since November 2021.
