Drew McIntyre says he was ready to go to New Japan in 2017.
In 2017, Drew McIntyre returned to WWE after being released by the company just a couple of years prior after tearing up the independent scene and getting into the best shape of his life. However, he almost returned to a brand new promotion rather than WWE until William Regal stepped in.
While speaking on the latest episode of the No-Contest Wrestling podcast, Drew McIntyre recalled how he almost signed with WWE in 2017.
“In 2017, when I returned to WWE, I was ready to go to New Japan at that point. That’s where my head was at. I spoke to the right people to start having the serious conversations, and Regal told me ‘you’ve got to talk to him, talk to Hunter first, go talk to Paul first’, and it was one minute into the conversation, I knew it was time to come back.”
Elsewhere in the same interview, McIntyre noted that he feared his Royal Rumble win would be booed due to Edge’s shocking return. You can read more about that here.
