Drew McIntyre speaks about his first year in pro wrestling.
At this stage in McIntyre’s career, he has a litany of championships and accomplishments in his pro wrestling career. Drew has been no stranger to hurdles in his career, returning to WWE after being initially released and providing the blueprint for released talent to succeed outside of the company. However, it was an even tougher beginning for McIntyre’s in ring career.
While speaking on the No-Contest Wrestling Podcast, Drew McIntyre was asked about the moment where he realized he would be wrestling for years to come during his early years in the ring.
“It’s kind of the opposite of, ‘oh no.’ Cause I knew it was going to be me for the rest of my life since I was a kid, and no matter what anyone told me, ‘what makes you think you’re going to go from this small country of five, 6 million people to this giant American company, but what makes you so special?’ I was the one that constantly motivated myself and when I did that first lesson, I was like, ‘I’m ready. I can do suplexes. I can do body slams. I can jump off the top rope. I’m an athlete.’ When I started doing the actual technical wrestling and taking the falls and it wasn’t coming as natural as I thought it would, I thought, ‘oh no.’ I was so convinced I’d walk in on the first day and the guy was going to go, ‘hey everybody, we’ve got the next Stone Cold Steve Austin here. This guy’s going to the next Rock, by the way.’ and it was, ‘oh crap, I’ve got so much to learn.’ So I had to work 10 times harder than I thought I was going to have to work and I was somewhat like Bambi on ice for the first year in that wrestling ring.”
McIntyre, along with former WWE Women’s World Champion Naomi got into it on social media earlier this week. You can read more about that here.
