Eddie Kingston: Low Ki Did ‘Some Mr. Miyagi Shit’ To Me To Keep Me Going During The Pandemic

Eddie Kingston has often said how he was on the verge of leaving wrestling during the pandemic before he got an opportunity with AEW.
Kingston had been wrestling since 2002, traveling across the world and becoming a top name on the independent scene before the world shut down in 2020 due to COVID. With the future of independent wrestling in doubt, Kingston questioned his own future.
“When I said I started maturing more during the pandemic, it’s because [Low Ki] was talking to me more during the pandemic,” Kingston told Tony Schiavone & Conrad Thompson on What Happened When. “He did some, as Ortiz calls it, ‘some Mr. Miyagi shit’ to me. He knew I was kind of down and out about maybe, possibly having to call it (a career) because of COVID and having to go back home and feeling like a loser. He just Mr. Miyagi’d me and was like, ‘Yeah, you should probably get ready to do that. You kind of failed.’ I was like, ‘What the fuck?’ He was like, ‘You just weren’t focused. Maybe if you got fuckig focused.’ He helped me out that way. I started getting focused. Things started falling into place. It was very weird how that kind of happened. I definitely give, not only for his wrestling stuff, but for his friendship and advice, which definitely helped me. Homicide, same thing. I don’t think I’ve told anyone that. It was a weird thing. I started to get more focused. He was on my ass about it. Next thing you know, I cut that promo at ICW, next thing you know, I’m getting the chance to beat up Cody, next thing you know I’m getting a contract.”
Kingston answered Cody Rhodes’ open challenge for the AEW TNT Championship on the July 22, 2020 episode of AEW Dynamite.
It was announced he had signed with AEW on July 30.
Elsewhere during the interview, Kingston commented on his final year on the independents. You can find his full comments here.
