Eric Bischoff On What It Would Take To Have Viable Competition Between AEW And WWE

Eric Bischoff gives his analysis on the current state of “competition” between AEW and WWE.

Nobody knows how to compete with WWE quite like Eric Bischoff. In the 90s, Eric Bischoff and WCW Monday Nitro defeated WWE Raw in head-to-head competition for a consecutive 83 weeks. Now, there is a new program on TNT that is attempting to break new ground in the wrestling space, AEW Dynamite.

Speaking on a recent episode of Foundation Radio, the former WCW president weighed in on what he feels needs to happen before there is a viable sense of competition between the two brands such as the feeling between WWE and WCW in the 90s.

“I know everyone wants to talk about what was the ‘Wednesday Night Wars’ comparing AEW to WWE. Here’s what has to happen for that to be viable. AEW’s got to go head to head. There’s gotta be a fight. There has to be a battle. Going back to storytelling – what are the stakes?... Until AEW gets to the point where they’re delivering a similar-sized audience and start trying to take some real estate – it’s a war! If you want a war, you gotta have a freakin’ war! You gotta do it! AEW needs to take away some WWE real estate and when that starts happening, people will believe the war, and then they’ll be invested."

In the past, Eric Bischoff has appeared on episodes of AEW Dynamite, usually in segments that involved his former employee, Chris Jericho.

WWE NXT and AEW Dynamite used to go head-to-head on Wednesday nights before NXT made the move to Tuesdays following WrestleMania 37. The most recent episode of AEW Dynamite was the most-watched television show on cable last Wednesday. Learn more here.
