Evil Uno Writes Detailed Thread Of How Indie Wrestling Promotions Can ‘Stay In The Green’

Evil Uno’s extensive thread.
All Elite Wrestling/Ring of Honor talent Evil Uno took to his social media to respond to questions about how independent promotions can stay in the green.
Uno co-runs the Mystery Wrestling promotion that is based in Canada. Below is his full thread:
“I’ve been tagged in a lot of “how can an indie company stay in the green nowadays” discussions this week. Mystery Wrestling is kind of a beast of its own, so our model may not work for everyone. In my opinion though, here are things I think would help most indie shows stay above board.
Diversifying your sources of income. At the end of the day, your ticketing can only bring in so much. Do you monetize your streams or VOD source? Do you have merchandise in house and pushed online? Do you monetize secondary content like reels and video posts?
Ticket prices should reflect the cost of your show. This is tough pill to swallow, but tickets can’t be 10 dollar per entry if the cost of your show is 20K. If you can’t break even with 75% of capacity, you are shooting yourself in the leg.
Beware the cost of fly-ins. Does new and exciting talent help bring in new viewers? Possibly. Does the extra ticket sales cover the cost of a flight, rate, hotel and travel arrangements? A realistic assessment of each talent can help you stay within your budget.
Film once and repurpose the content. Every indie is spending a lot of money for one night of entertainment, but the return on investment shouldn’t end there. Reuse the content in reels, social posts, highlights, etc. The extra effort will grow your brand and create income to support your show.
This is my personal mantra, but DO IT YOURSELF. I don’t want to speak ill of aggregator sites, but you will make more money putting your content behind your own Patreon than being a part of a larger pie elsewhere. You remain in control and the people know they are supporting you directly
Run shorter shows. I understand you want everyone to wrestle, it’s an issue I have as wellc but the cost of a 7 match card is much lower than the cost of a 11 match card. I guarantee the viewer will be more likely to come back after a 120 minute show rather than a 210 minute show.
That is all for my TED Talk. I don’t feel like I have the best grasp of it all, but I am happy to share more with any promoter who wants to learn how we do things. Feel free to reach out.”
