Details Behind Jon Moxley vs. Rey Fenix Match Change, Issues

Needless to say, the ending of the AEW Dynamite International Title match wasn’t supposed to go the way that it did.

Fightful reported that almost immediately following the Jon Moxley vs. Rey Fenix match, that Moxley had been hurt early in the match, and most believed it wasn’t actually the highly criticized piledriver that did the damage. Either way, Moxley walked out on his own power, and was checked on by the BCC and Tony Khan after the situation. Moxley implied to people that he was okay.

However, that wasn’t where the headaches ended. An audible was called during the match, and Rey Fenix won the AEW International Championship. Not only did it affect that match, but it caused immediate changes to AEW Dynamite, and possibly WrestleDream.

Fightful has learned the originally, a non- AEW wrestler was supposed to come out on AEW Dynamite and challenge Jon Moxley for WrestleDream. However, when the match result changed, so did the plan to come out and make a challenge. We haven’t learned who it was.

We were contacted by several talent on the roster that said while they like Rick Knox, there was heavy heat on him within the company, as this wasn’t the first time something like this has happened and a wrestler wasn't protected. Those that we spoke to say it was not an accident that Knox was not booked for the following week's AEW Dynamite.

For those asking why Fenix needed to be cleared this week, he was banged up on the same spot Moxley was at Grand Slam.
