Matt Makowski Says ROH Or AEW Is His Goal, Was A Bummed ROH Went On Hiatus In 2021

Matt Makowksi started his wrestling career in 2019, but he was active in the world of MMA a decade prior, fighting for Elite XC and Bellator.

Makowski is 37 years old, but given his late start in wrestling, can still be considered a prospect as he has less than five years of experience in the squared circle.

In 2021, Makowski competed for Ring of Honor during the pandemic tapings, picking up two victories and seemingly factoring into future plans. Unfortunately, ROH announced it was going on hiatus at the end of 2021 and was eventually purchased by Tony Khan in 2022.

Speaking to Jeremy Lambert & Stephen Jensen on The Spotlight, Makowski discussed working for ROH and future goals in wrestling.

"That was a big bummer for me. Having a foot in the door, basically what the goal was for me, pretty much been ROH, AEW. At this point, I don't care, talking about my age. I look a little younger than I am, so I get away with it. With a company like AEW, I feel they are more open to signing people that are passionate and can sell in the moment, not necessarily investing in a ten-year plan, which may or may not be smart. In my heart, I still feel like it's possible, so I'm going to keep going for it. Other companies, maybe not so much, and that's fair. Getting older and being more injury-prone is absolutely a thing. We're seeing it a lot in wrestling. When Adam [Adam Cole] jumped off (the ramp), I saw it. This is one of the reasons I wanted to get into wrestling, I had more control over what happens to my body. In MMA, the person across from you is trying to kill you. With wrestling, somebody wants to do something, and I'm like, 'Maybe not this time.' I'll try to change things around to where I feel safe and comfortable with whatever we're going to do," he said.

Makowski is active on the independent scene and has competed for GCW, JCW, and Beyond Wrestling.
