Flip Gordon Says CMLL Forced Him To Adjust His Style And Get Faster

Flip Gordon explains the differences in training he noticed in the United States vs. CMLL.

After signing with CMLL in 2023, Flip Gordon won the NWA World Historic Middleweight Title the next year. He kept the title for 595 days before losing it to Volador Jr. on 7/3 CMLL Viernes Espectacular.

During a recent conversation with Fightful’s Luis Pulido, Flip Gordon was asked about the difference between the training wrestlers receive for television in the United States vs. the CMLL system.

“I feel like when I arrived in CMLL, immediately I noticed I had to adjust my style because it’s a much faster pace here. The luchadores here are so much faster, they’re so much quicker and they’re very spectacular. The way they can fly and dive and move with such fluidity literally made me step my game up. My first month here, I was like, ‘Man, I got to get faster cause if not, I’m not going to be able to keep up and I’m not going to be able to stand out.’

I think that first month was a huge learning curve for me to learn the style, how I need to adapt and how I need to pick up my step a little bit. But I think I was able to adapt very well and overcome a lot of those challenges in the beginning of the language barrier, the culture barrier, the different style. But I think I was able to adapt, learn, and overcome pretty quickly.”
