Former WWE world champion Alberto El Patron is continuing to have talks with TNA about joining that promotion.
PWInsider first reported the continuing talks between TNA and El Patron, although TNA is not expected to make any major additions to its roster or its creative direction until at least its subsequent set of tapings, in March.
As Alberto Del Rio, he had four total reigns in WWE with one of the promotion's two major championships. After he was fired in August of 2014 following a backstage altercation, Del Rio worked for AAA, Lucha Underground, WWC, and Ring of Honor before he ultimately returned to WWE in October of 2014, defeating John Cena to become the new U.S. Champion. His push stalled thereafter, and Del Rio's second stint in WWE ended less than a year later, as the two sides came to terms on his release while Del Rio was serving out a 30-day suspension for violating the promotion's wellness policy.
He has remained in the news since leaving WWE. He became engaged to Paige, who remains on the WWE roster but is still recuperating from neck surgery. Del Rio also missed an AAA date in October after he was involved in a stabbing incident. Meanwhile, he also was named President of Combate Americas. El Patron also was involved in a backstage brawl at an IWRG event in Mexico last month, and just recently was arrested in Austria for his role in a fight that also involved his brother.
TNA will hold tapings later this week. They mark the first set of tapings since Anthem Sports took over control of the company.
