Freddie Prinze Jr. Recalls WWE Writers Being Assigned To Wrestlers Who Were Same Ethnicity As Them

A memory from Prinze Jr.’s time with WWE.
For several years of his career in the entertainment field, actor Freddie Prinze Jr. worked at WWE as a writer on the creative team.
That came up during the latest episode of his Wrestling with Freddie podcast. Prinze Jr. recalled when WWE writers would be assigned to wrestlers who were the same ethnicity as them.
“He’s got that aura,” Prinze Jr. said about Rey Mysterio. “When I worked at WWE back in the day, they were like, ‘Well, you speak Spanish so you’re working with Rey.’ That’s kind of how the writers got assigned people. It was like, if you’re Black, you write for the Black (wrestlers). If you’re Spanish — they didn’t know I was Puerto Rican. They’re like, you’re Mexican, go work with Rey…”
Prinze Jr. had plans to launch his own wrestling promotion. He gave a detailed account of why those plans are on hold, and his comments can be read here.
