Often when one were to look at some of the worst gimmicks in wrestling in the past 25 years, chances are former WCW star Glacier will be on that list.
In an interview with False Start, Glacier talked about his time in WCW. Ironically (or not?), Glacier said he was worried he was going to get heat backstage for being on one of the top two wrestling programs of the late 1990's, as if a wrestler with an ice gimmick shouldn’t already be afraid of any varying degree of heat whatsoever, be it metaphorical or literal.
For Glacier, it’s pretty much both.
"Man, [I thought] I’m going to have so much heat in the back," Glacier said. "Here I am, to most people on the national level, a no-name, and I’m coming in and I’m getting this entrance that’s the biggest and most elaborate thing that’s ever been in wrestling."
But Glacier still wanted to be competing with the best the industry had to offer at the time, despite his big break came in the form of a blatant rip-off of Mortal Kombat character Sub-Zero in a time when Mortal Kombat was one of the most popular video games in the United States at that time.
Glacier said he didn’t really expect his rise to come in the form of this gimmick, but said it is not something you know what will happen to you in terms of receiving a role in this capacity.
"You never know when your break’s going to come, and you never know how your break’s going to come," Glacier said. "Do any of you guys think I used to walk around dreaming of wearing a half-mask and armor? You’ve got to have thick skin in this business, period, but think about it: it was a video-game character. Not everybody was going to like that."
Glacier, real name Raymond M. Lloyd, started his wrestling career in the late 1980's and the Glacier persona lasted from 1996-99 on WCW television.
