Gunther destroys Pat McAfee at WWE Backlash, but McAfee appears to have earned his respect.
Gunther wasn't in significant jeopardy of losing at WWE Backlash, but Pat McAfee gave it his all in the one-sided mismatch on May 10, 2025. Throughout the match, Michael Cole, Pat's broadcast partner on Monday Night Raw and the trigger for this entire match, was openly rooting for Pat. Unfortunately, he eventually found himself in the middle of the action, nearly being Powerbombed by the former World Heavyweight Champion.
McAfee rallied and nearly pinned Gunther with the help of Michael Cole, but in the end, he had no choice but to pass out to a Rear-Naked Choke.

After the match, Gunther uncharacteristically showed a gesture of respect to McAfee before leaving the ring and allowing Pat to soak in the adulation of the St. Louis crowd.
