Gunther: It Took A While, But I’ve Fully Embraced Being Longest Reigning WWE Intercontinental Champion

Gunther says he is getting used to being the longest reigning Intercontinental Champion of all time.

Since capturing the championship in mid 2022 from Ricochet, Gunther has ran through a litany of the top stars in WWE, including the likes of Sheamus, Drew McIntyre and more. Now, 640+ days later, he is the longest reigning champion of all time, set to face off with Sami Zayn for the championship at WrestleMania 40 next month.

While speaking to 967 The Eagle in a recent interview, Gunther remarked that he is now embracing being the longest reigning WWE Intercontinental Champion of all time.

"It’s a little bit surreal to see your own name on the list with all those legends and greats who have held the title for a long time as well. It’s also very important that you see yourself like that and recognize yourself as one of them. In my case, being on the top of the list. You have to fully embrace that. It takes a little while to do that, but I’m fully there now. I’m not stopping yet. I still have a little in me with the Intercontinental Championship and I’m fully focused on whatever the next challenge is. Adding to my legacy and the legacy of the championship."

Gunther most recently defended the championship on the February 19th edition of Monday Night RAW, defeating Jey Uso.

Chad Gable recently commented on not being the one to face off with Gunther for the championship at WrestleMania 40. You can read more about that here.
