Hirooki Goto Defeats Michael Elgin To Become The New NEVER Openweight Champion; Jeff Cobb Steps Up As The Next Challenger

Michael Elgin could not hold on to the title.

Eight days ago the "Unbreakable" Michael Elgin walked down the ramp of 'Osaka Jo Hall' at NJPW's 'Dominion' event with intentions of capturing the NEVER Openweight Championship. In his way of doing just that was Taichi and the champion Hirooki Goto.

Elgin has always wanted to fight Goto one-on-one but due to the constant interference from Taichi, the sly 'Suzuki-Gun' member was able to insert himself into the championship picture. At 'Dominion' Elgin executed a "sitout-powerbomb" onto Taichi to win the NEVER Openweight Championship and post-match Elgin had a brief stare down with the then-former champion Hirooki Goto.

Goto was not pinned in the three-way and was set for a rematch in the main event on day 2 of NJPW's 'Kizuna Road' show. The two bulls headlined the show and the end of the contest saw Goto catch Elgin with his signature "GTR" and then loaded Big Mike up for another round of the maneuver to win back the NEVER Openweight Title that he lost a mere eight days ago. Following Goto's victory Michael Elgin's partner in last year's 'World Tag League', Jeff Cobb, made his way out the ring and challenged Goto for his newly-won championship.
