Isla Dawn looks back on her WWE main roster call up.
In June of 2023, NXT Women’s Tag Team Champions Unholy Union (Alba Fyre and Isla Dawn), would get called up to the WWE main roster. The pair would be thrown into the deep end, as they would immediately begin a program with the WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions at the time, Ronda Rousey and Shayna Baszler.
While speaking to Fightful’s Corey Brennan in a new interview, Isla spoke about her and Fyre’s callup, noting that it was a complete shock. Dawn also spoke about getting the chance to work with Ronda Rousey, recalling that it peaked her father’s interest in wrestling.
“I had a great time, because it was surprising for us to get called up when we did for that. Like I remember we’d won the titles at Stand and Deliver and I think it must have been like a week and a half, two weeks later or something that they had the draft and they had us come in for this draft party, and I remember thinking, like, oh, they’ve just put the titles on, we’re not going up, because why would they put the titles on us? That’s silly. So, like that was a complete shock, and then we kind of went to Smackdown that next week, and it was like, oh, this is the idea, and then we just kind of get flung into that, and I was like, oh, shit, I watched her (Ronda Rousey) batter people years ago, it just seemed like it was just flung right in. But she was lovely. I had so much fun, and Shayna’s always the best. Shayna’s great. But I was sad we only got to have one match because I would have loved to have done more. But yeah, she was so fun to work with. I remember my dad, because my dad’s not into wrestling. He was never a fan of it and he would watch it when I’m doing it and he’ll go to shows that I’m on and he’ll get into it when he’s there but like he’s not gonna know anyone’s name or whatever. But I remember my dad being like, ‘Ronda Rousey? Wow!’ and it impressed him and I was- the effect that she has over not just wrestling, not just MMA, worldwide she’s a star. She was so kind and so lovely like I’m a big Ronda Rousey fan, and she’d beat me up if I said anything different. Same as Shayna!”
While Dawn and Fyre would come up short in unifying both sets of women’s tag titles in WWE, they would later capture the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships at WWE Clash At The Castle 2024. You can read more about that here.
