Jack Gallagher Shares Proposed Plans For Scrapped WWE Cruiserweight Tag Team Championships

WWE Cruiserweight Tag Team Championships? According to Jack Gallagher, they almost happened.

WWE 205 Live has existed since 2016 as the exclusive home of WWE’s Cruiserweight division. While the division would eventually be merged into the NXT brand, WWE's Cruiserweights were once exclusive to Monday Night Raw. During this time, names like TJP, Brian Kendrick, Jack Gallagher, Noam Dar, and others all proudly wore the Cruiserweight banner on their sleeves.

Throughout the five years of 205 Live’s existence, the only Championship ever contested for on the brand is the singles WWE/NXT Cruiserweight Championship. However, taking to Instagram to share the story, Jack Gallagher reveals that WWE once considered a tag team division for the Cruiserweights.

In his Instagram post, Gallagher mentioned that WWE flirted with the idea of having specific rules for the tag team division including Lucha Libre-inspired provisions that would be exclusive to the Friday night show.

It's Tuesday. You know what that means.

It's time to talk about 205Live!

I've had a few people enquiring about the existence of the cruiserweight tag team titles, so allow me to spill the tea.

There's a truck that houses all the props that might be used during a weekly taping of Smackdown or Raw. Onboard you'll find a collection of sledgehammers, barbed wire bats, even umbrellas. This also happens to be the place where two, purple and silver, cruiserweight tag team title belts were kept. They were kept there from the first week that the division appeared on television.

These belts were stubbled upon by a few members of the roster (who may have also took a few photos holding them --), so we all pitched ideas to get the titles introduced.

The two ideas that were often favoured were: One, to change the rules of cruiserweight tag team matches to the Mexican tag rules i.e. when both feet hit the floor on the outside of the ring that constitutes a legal tag; the other was to establish three men teams, instead of the usual two, and make them trios titles.

All of these ideas were - obviously - rejected.

The only well-known instance of a Cruiserweight Tag Team Championship was during the dying days of WCW. Rey Mysterio, who held the defunct championship with Billy Kidman, recently stated that he still has the titles in his possession.
