Jay Lethal is a longtime veteran in Ring of Honor and one of the most respected names in the company. People in his position could make a power play to ensure they remain on top and no one threatens their spot.
But Lethal says he doesn't want to go down the route and instead wants to make sure new talent gets over when they work with him.
"There has been times where I have -- I don't get my way all the time -- but I've had to beg to lose," said Lethal on the ROHStrong podcast. "There have been times where I've stepped in the ring and said, 'I don't need to win this match. It would do wonders for this person if they won' because I do believe that I've gotten to a point where -- unless we're in a tournament -- regular matches that just fill up a card, I don't believe a loss would really hurt me. That's not me being cocky, I understand where I lie. I've had to beg for someone else to win."
Lethal continued, "I have seen times where guys don't want to lose. Higher-ups, guys on the bottom, guys who think they've done more than they have. It breaks my heart to see and hear that kind of stuff. I've tried to do the opposite. I've begged multiple times to lose. [The booker] doesn't always listen to me. A lot of people think I get my way, but I really don't. I have to beg and beg for even one or two things to go my way. But ROH does listen to requests and there's an open door. But you don't have to do that because you're in good hands."
Lethal didn't mention any names on who has gone to management to say that they didn't want to lose, noting that he's worked for so many companies that he could say something like that and still protect the innocent.
