Jerry Lawler Talks New Contract And Royal Rumble

WWE Hall of Famer Jerry Lawler recently renewed his contract with the promotion heading into tonight's Royal Rumble. He will be appearing on the kick-off show with Shawn Michaels and also in the commentary booth during the pay-per-view, to call the Rumble match itself.

Lawler appeared on Bill Apter's podcast Is Wrestling Fixed? to discuss his contract renewal and, according to Lawler, the one-year contract is not unusual:

The Elite: We're Getting AEW Back To What It Was Supposed To Be

"I was never not signed by the WWE. My old contract came up for renewal and I just signed another one year contract like I’ve been doing for…like last twenty something years now? At one time I had three year long contracts, then two years. But for the past maybe 7-8 years, They usually just sign people to one year contracts. So I was never not under contract to WWE."

Lawler also discussed his ongoing feud with Dolph Ziggler and commentating while Ziggler was in the ring. He shared stories from past Royal Rumble matches. In particularl, the unpredictability of the Rumble match this year has Lawler perplexed.

"This year it's almost impossible, I think it's crazy to even hazard a guess at this point. There are so many participants in this year in the Rumble, they can't miss. How could you think Brock Lesnar would not win the Royal Rumble? But then, How could you think Bill Goldberg would not win? How could you think The Undertaker would not win? Who knows what surprise entrants there is. Braun Strowman! There's so many people, you look at them and think 'they gotta win.' But in reality, only one person is gonna win the Royal Rumble," said Lawler.

Lawler also discussed Vince McMahon Sr. regretting not using Andy Kaufman and wrestling young guys on the independents.

Apter's podcast is available on Itunes and AudioBoom.com.

The Royal Rumble is tonight in San Antonio, Texas, with the pre-show beginning at 5 p.m. ET and the main card at 7 p.m. ET. Fightful.com will providing a live stat tracker, viewing party, and live tweeting for the pay-per-view.
