Jim Ross discusses modern-day commentators.
The world of wrestling commentary has changed drastically in recent years. In WWE, new commentators like Joe Tessitore, Wade Barrett, and Pat McAfee have stuck with audiences while names like Jimmy Smith and Adnan Virk have not.
In other promotions, things have largely remained the same. AEW rotates names like Excalibur, Ian Riccaboni, Taz, Tony Schiavone, Nigel McGuinness, and Jim Ross. TNA has stuck with their main commentary team of Tom Hannifan and Matthew Rehwoldt for years at this point.
On the latest episode of his Grilling JR podcast, Jim Ross said that the current generation of commentators can sometimes talk too much during important moments on TV.
“I do. I think they should let the pictures speak more volumes than not. Laying out is an art form. It’s not a matter of if you lay out, it’s a matter of when you lay out and let the action on the television screen speak for itself. I think they could do a better job and a better service to their brand and the product if they laid out just a little bit more and let things evolve and then react to that as opposed to just filling time and as you said, getting themselves over. That don’t work for me.”
Elsewhere in the podcast, Ross confirmed that he'll be at AEW All In Texas. Check out his full comments by clicking here.
