The first of the two brands' world title matches ended with the champion keeping his gold as WWE World Heavyweight Champion Jinder Mahal used interference from his henchmen to hand Shinsuke Nakamura his first loss on the Smackdown Brand.
This match served as the co-main event for WWE Summerslam, with the WWE Universal Title Match serving as the main event.
