Cena hasn't had the hottest run on WWE pay-per-view of late. He lost to Roman Reigns at WWE No Mercy before taking a hiatus, Upon his return in November 2017, Cena was unceremoniously eliminated from Team Smackdown's Survivor Series Squad. His Royal Rumble appearance ended with him being eliminated, as did his participation in February's WWE Elimination Chamber top contender match.

When he appeared on Smackdown, he was joined in the ring by General Manager Daniel Bryan and Commissioner Shane McMahon. The following is an excerpt from Fightful's live coverage play-by-play of the opening segment of Smackdown.

John Cena comes out to the ring and talks about wanting a match at Wrestlemania before Shane McMahon comes out to the ring and talks about the fatal five-way before Daniel Bryan comes out to the ring. Daniel says that he agrees with Shane and that they will give John am opportunity to face AJ in the fatal five at WWE Fastlane. John agrees to the match before Daniel announces that he will face AJ Styles to earn his spot as we go to commercial.
