John Cena Confirms Pivots In Last Year, Calls The Year ‘A Compacted Version Of ‘Let’s Go Cena,’ ‘Cena Sucks”
John Cena will have worked 36 dates in his final year after competing in his last match on Saturday against Gunther.
The year has been full of ups and downs with fans wondering what could have been with his heel turn, what wasn’t with the disappearance of The Rock and Travis Scott, and what was with matches against some of his top rivals.
Speaking to Pat McAfee, Cena reflected on his final year.
“We can sit here and chatter about what could have been or we can react to what is, and we can go like hell to make what is great. What I love about the whole year now, and this is something we can reflect on, the whole year was an intentional year-long story. Some moments folks liked, some they hated, some you wished they panned out differently. That’s like a microcosm of someone’s existence. You look at 23 years of John Cena in WWE, ‘Man, I wish some moments were different. I wish he had this opponent more. Why didn’t they book you in this angle? Why did you ever do this?’ It is a microcosm for what I’ve done. I love the fact that, through it all, fans loved it and hated it. Just like me. ‘Let’s go Cena.’ ‘Cena sucks.’ This last year has been like a compacted version of ‘Let’s go Cena.’ ‘Cena sucks,’ and the realization of it’s almost not me, it’s all of us. We’re all getting all of our emotions out. I never put a lot of focus on what could have been. If someone chooses to bail or we no longer have this option, that’s fine,” he said.
Cena noted that throughout history, injuries, people being burnt out or other factors have forced pivots.
“I love the fact that there have been so many pivots. AJ was a pivot. Brock was a pivot. Post-WrestleMania, all that stuff, was a pivot. Because of the pivot, I got Punk, I got to work with Logan in a singles match, I got Dom, I got AJ, Ron Cena, Sami Zayn, Cody at SummerSlam. Because of these pivots. Never once was I like, ‘It could have been this.’ Look what we got,” said Cena.
Cena will compete in his last match against Gunther on December 13 at WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event.
Elsewhere on the show, Cena confirmed that his match will be the main event. You can find his full comments here.
