John Cena: The Firefly Funhouse Match Was Kind Of My Brainchild And My Creation, I'm Glad It Worked

John Cena looks back on the Firefly Fun House match.

Cena, a 16-time world champion, returned to WWE ahead of WrestleMania 36. Around that time, the COVID-19 pandemic flipped the wrestling world on its head, as large crowds weren't allowed to attend wrestling shows. Many companies adapted and started to feature cinematic matches that were taped in advance. Cena's match with Wyatt remains one of the most memorable examples, as they clashed in the Firefly Fun House match, which included callbacks to past versions of both Cena and Wyatt, a puppet of Vince McMahon, and Cena joining the New World Order, among other highlights.

Speaking with MTV News’ Josh Horowitz as part of 92NY Recanati-Kaplan Talks, Cena was asked to name the most rewarding feud from his time with WWE, and he pointed to the Firefly Fun House Match.

“I did a unique piece of programming called the Firefly Funhouse match, which was a giant exercise in vulnerability. I worked my ass off on that thing, and I thank everyone who was involved because no one does it alone, but it was kind of my brainchild and my creation. You want to talk about looking in the mirror, that was kind of a public look in the mirror. I’m glad we did it, and man, I’m glad it worked. I didn’t think anybody would get it, and they kind of it for me because of the pandemic happened, and the events were weird. But I’m really glad that people understood it, and there’s a lot of Easter eggs in there, too. If you don’t know, you can go back and watch it. I got to be in the NWO," Cena said.
