Cena returns as a "free agent," allowing him to appear between Raw and Smackdown brands. Cena is scheduled for several live events on both brands.

Cena's former foe Rusev also returned on the Independent Day episode of Smackdown Live, after being sidelined for over four months. Rusev has been cleared for over a month, but was kept off of TV.  Cena would challenge Rusev to a flag match, which Rusev said he would oblige in due time.

It was announced that the match woudl take place July 23 at WWE Battleground.
