At Money in the Bank, John Cena confronted SmackDown’s Roman Reigns after the “Tribal Chief” successfully defended the WWE Universal Championship against Edge. It had been reported for a while that John Cena vs. Roman Reigns was the hopeful main event for this year's SummerSlam event.

After SummerSlam went off the air, John Cena thanked the WWE Universe and promised that was not a one-man appearance.

"As always, I want to thank all the WWE superstars for putting their lives and their bodies on the line to entertain all of you but most importantly...I missed you guys," Cena said. "I really, really missed you guys."
