John Cena Won’t Pitch Working On A Movie With The Rock To The Rock, But He’s All In If There’s An Opportunity To Work With Him

John Cena explains why he won’t pitch working with The Rock.

John Cena and The Rock have a long relationship that began ahead of WrestleMania 28 when they were on opposite sides of the ring for two WrestleMania events. Over a decade later, they found themselves working together ahead of WrestleMania 41.

Though they’ve been tied in wrestling circles, they’ve never done a film as the two lead stars.

Speaking to Josh Horowitz on Happy Sad Confused, Cena was asked if he’s ever pitched a buddy movie with Dwayne Johnson.

“Dwayne and I have talked about creative businesses we have together. When I see him, it is genuine; it’s not a ‘How you doing ’; it’s ‘Let’s take a second. Hey man, this time you said hi to my wife. I really need you to know that meant a lot.’ Then we’ll have a conversation about that, and he’s very giving with his time, very sincere, and very present. I don’t want to bug him down with, ‘Yo, I have this pitch.’ My perspective is that the individual doesn’t seem like he gets a lot of time to himself. When he’s giving enough of his time to be present with me, the last thing I want to do is hand him a pitch deck. If folks that make movies, there are a lot of folks out there that are in charge of orchestrating those things, if they see Dwayne’s body of work and my body work, and they’re like, ‘They’d be great together.’ If that opportunity comes, I’m all in. To say I wouldn’t want to share the screen with Dwayne Johnson is a bald-faced lie. I learned from the way I operated in our first run in WWE that beating my chest and goading him into that opportunity was so wrong of me. I would love to do it, but I’m not going to advocate for it when it’s beyond my control, and I don’t want to force his hand into a decision he doesn’t want to make,” he said.

The two worked together at Elimination Chamber 2025 when Cena turned on Cody to align with The Rock. Rock has not been on WWE TV since.

Cena currently stars in Matchbox, which is available to watch on AppleTV.
