John Cena speaks on how his wrestling character is as much WWE’s intellectual property as it is his, noting that they have earned it.

Cena is considered by many to be one of, if not the greatest professional wrestler of all time, with the 17 time world champion calling an end to his in ring career at the end of last year, losing to Gunther at WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event. Cena has maintained that he will remain retired from the squared circle, while also routinely expressing gratitude to those that have helped him along the way to becoming one of the most recognizable professional wrestlers of all time.

While speaking to The Guardian in a new interview, John Cena noted that WWE/TKO have earned their share of ownership in the characters of ‘John Cena.’

“John Cena is who I am as a human being,” he says, “and there is a company – WWE/TKO – that has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in the intellectual property of the character John Cena. And rightfully so; they have earned their share of ownership of that.”

Cena however, rejected the idea that he made sacrifices along the way to superstardom.

“I prefer to use the word choice … When we say yes to something, we say no to everything else.”

Elsewhere in the same interview, Cena would continue to express his lack of guilt or shame for his relationship with Vince McMahon. You can read more about that here.
