Ken Anderson says that Vince McMahon flat out told him he was too funny after a segment with Tony Chimel.

Anderson would break out onto the WWE scene in the mid 2000s and would feature as one of the companies top heels until he was released from the company in mid 2009.

While speaking to Soundsphere Magazine in a new interview, Ken Anderson recalled working with McMahon, noting that initially, Vince told him not to worry about being a good guy or a bad guy.

“I remember asking Vince, ‘What do you want me to do in this promo?’ And he was just like, ‘Don’t go out there and worry about being a good guy or a bad guy, just get over. Just be entertaining.’”

Anderson continued, noting that following a segment with Tony Chimel, Vince would point out that he was ‘too funny’.

“Vince flat-out told me I was too funny, I came back through the curtain after that jelly donut bit with Chimel and he just goes, ‘Too funny, goddammit.’ Later he said to me, ‘Funny does not equal money.’ That’s when I realised there was a ceiling on how far they wanted me to push that side of my personality. I said, ‘What about The Rock?’ And he was like, ‘Well, I hear you, but…’”

Anderson also noted that Vince explained that The Rock was forced to try to be funny following his infamous ‘Dear God’ promo on Billy Gunn.

Elsewhere in the same interview, Anderson would speak about a teacher of his in high school that noted he needed to do something with his ‘radio voice’. You can read more about that here.
