On his recent appearance on WWE's After The Bell podcast, Owens talked about his history on the independent scene before noting that he thinks a possible appearance in a independent promotion is more likely than ever under WWE's new regime.

"I'm very deeply rooted on the independent scene, that's where I came up and I still have so many friends there and there are a few Independent companies that I still hold very near and dear to my heart that I'd love to one day show back up on, just for fun, whether it's a promo or maybe a match. That stuff, over the years, I've always thought of, 'it'd be really cool if I got to do that one day: Now, it feels like more of a possibility than ever. It doesn't mean it's going to happen, but it feels like it could, and that's very exciting for everybody involved, the fans and the wrestlers."

Before coming to WWE in 2014, Owens spent over ten years on the independent scene, where he competed primarily in Ring Of Honor.
