Kevin Patrick Praises Drake Maverick As 'Mastermind' Behind WWE Main Event

WWE Main Event has been used as a developmental show in recent months with NXT talent taking on Raw talent before WWE Raw goes live on Monday nights.

Fans have seen the likes of Joe Gacy, Zoey Stark, JD McDonagh, and more compete against Cedric Alexander, Akira Tozawa, and Dana Brooke on the show.

Speaking on WWE After The Bell, Corey Graves and Kevin Patrick, who calls WWE Main Event, gave flowers to the talent.

"Lately, we've been getting a lot of NXT superstars coming up for a week or two to get their feet wet, sort of acclimate themselves to what it means to be on Raw or Smackdown versus NXT, which is a different world. I have to give credit to the WWE superstars who have been competing against these young guns, these up-and-comers, who have been holding the ship together. Guys like Cedric Alexander in particular, Cedric deserves his flowers. This is a dude who has been tag team champion, cruiserweight champion, he's the real deal. You realize what an opportunity it is and you maximize it and capitalize on it, that's what Cedric has done. He's putting on bangers with the likes of Joe Gacy," said Graves.

Patrick picked up the sentence by saying, "Grayson Waller, JD McDonagh. There's been a host of NXT superstars that have come down, and Byron Saxton and I have the privilege of calling it and I absolutely love it because you see Zoey Stark and Alba Fyre and Fallon Henley, they crave this opportunity in front of the WWE universe and whatever venue we're at. All of a sudden, you have a star maker. Shelton Benjamin is perfect example, who has really been turning it on as of late. He's been absolutely outstanding. Tamina, another wonderful example. Dana Brooke, Akira Tozawa, each and every week they've been working so hard with the NXT superstars that come down and they are putting on one hell of a match. Cedric, Shelton, Tamina, Dana, they deserve this praise."

Graves continued by saying, "What I love about what they've done is they've sort of made it their own little corner of the WWE Universe. You see that same roster of characters repeating and they've developed their own little program where they are the stars and they are telling their own stories. It's about doing what you can with the opportunity provided. That's exactly what Dana Brooke is doing, what Cedric is doing, Tamina. You take whatever is thrown your way and you try to hit a home run. You know why? Because something happens, like what's happening right now, somebody takes notes, higher up the ladder than myself, but somebody will look and say, 'Cedric has been kicking ass on Main Event, let's see what he can do on Raw. Dana Brooke, we haven't seen her much on Raw since losing the 24/7 Championship, she's been working her ass off on Main Event.' That's how this game works. Keep your head down, do the best you can with what's provided to you, and wait for your number to be called and make yourself a more attractive option to everybody."

After praising the on-screen work of the wrestlers, Patrick praised the people behind the scenes of WWE Main Event, specifically Drake Maverick.

"Behind the scenes, there are many more people to it than just the superstars, and that's why I have to give a shoutout to James Curtin aka Maverick, Spud, he has been the mastermind behind Main Event over the last few weeks and we've seen much more creativity on the show. He's played a huge role there," said Patrick.

Graves added, "Drake Maverick, for those keeping track at home, he's doing what he can with what he's provided and making something special that you do not want to miss."

Maverick was released in November 2021 but hired back as a member of the creative team in February.
