Killer Kross Says Promoters Were Concerned About Contract Tampering For Two Or Three Months After WWE Departure
Killer Kross wasn’t going to fake out promoters.
Following his departure from WWE in August, different promoters and businesses were hesitant to reach out to Killer Kross at first, as there was a belief that the situation could be a work/storyline. This was fueled by the fake injury storyline that WWE used for Seth Rollins just a few weeks prior.
Eventually, the dust settled and Kross hit the free agency grounds running at full speed. Speaking with Fightful for a new interview, Kross talked about the situation.
“I think people were aloof and confused as to whether or not it was a work or it was a shoot because the character was on such a rise in the programming in terms of having a connection with the audience that people just naturally thought, ‘There’s no way that the company is going to let him walk or things are going to go south because clearly they can see that this is what we want. We’re telling them on a weekly basis this is what we want.’ But there was obviously so much more to it than that. So when people did contact me for work, it was like, ‘Hey, I don’t want to get into this contract tampering thing, but is it possible that we can talk? Is it even OK that I’m asking if we can talk?’ There was a lot of that in the beginning of every conversation for two or three months. I was like guys, ‘Yes. I’m not lying to you. You’re not going to be blindsided by lawyers and attorneys. I am available to work what are you thinking what’s the idea and etc.’”
Some fans were also led astray by WWE’s promotion of Killer Kross’ book at SummerSlam, which was his final event for the company. Kross spoke about the decision to use ECW Press as the publisher for his book.
“So the publisher, ECW Press, this was the publisher that I was planning on going to through a series of people that were putting me in touch with them before I got back. My book was finished. It had to go through a second editorial process to make sure that the company was comfortable with the way I articulated certain things. That took, my God, longer than it should have. The book was ready for me as the writer to be published before I came back. I had mentioned that I was in the process of going into publishing when we were resigning. So I just said, ‘If we’re under the WWE umbrella, I know how
things work there.’ So they would be getting a cut of the book if I was gonna be working with them. That’s kind of how that worked.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Kross talked about some of the differences between NXT and Raw/SmackDown. Check out his full comments by clicking here.
