Konnan has done a lot in the business outside of the ring.
Konnan has been involved in the wrestling business for over thirty 30 years. He has traveled the globe and competed in the United States, Mexico and overseas. The former CMLL World Heavyweight Champion did have a successful career as an in-ring performer but he is also well known for what he has done for Lucha Libre as a whole. Konnan has helped the likes of Rey Mysterio, Pentagon Jr. and Fenix break into the wrestling business.
Rey Mysterio is on record for saying that he owes Konnan his life for opening up so many doors for him. Konnan came across the likes of Pentagon Jr. and Fenix and saw the potential in those athletes as well as many other luchadores in Mexico who have yet to be introduced to the mainstream wrestling fan-base and Konnan spoke to that while being interviewed by Jim Varsallone of the Miami Herald.
?Yeah I met them [Pentagon Jr. and Fenix] almost ten years ago I think. Around ten years ago, and they had different names, and you know, when I first met them, I though they were homeless - they were so poor, but you could see the talent, and I spent a lot of time with them and just? because you never, you know, whether it?s Rey Mysterio or Psicosis or even LAX in IMPACT? you notice the talent and then you try to cultivate it, and you help them along. Some people don?t know how great they can be unless you show them or you tell them and so I spent a lot of time with all these guys and they all had the same thing in common - they had talent, they had passion and they wanted to be somebody and they?ve all turned out to be great." Konnan expressed. "I never knew how great Rey Mysterio was gonna be. I knew he was great but you never know how great they?re gonna be. You know the potential is there and they also have to live up to their part of the bargain and all of these guys have: Pentagon and Fenix. You know Jim [Varsallone] you?ve known me for a long time. There was a time when nobody gave a damn about Lucha Libre now everybody wants to have a Lucha Libre match?.
