Lex Luger Discusses Cut TV Segment Where He Wore WWE Title To The Ring

Lex Luger details a TV segment from 1994 where he made an entrance as the WWE Champion.

In the lead-up to his second pay-per-view encounter with Yokozuna for the WWE Title at WWE WrestleMania X, there was a cut segment from a WWE TV taping where Lex Luger took the WWE championship belt from Jim Cornette and then had Vince McMahon put the title around his waist before introducing him as the new WWE Champion, where he would then make a full entrance. Over the years, folklore suggests that this was a spoiler indicating Lex Luger would win the title at WWE WrestleMania in 1994, and because the moment leaked, plans changed.

Lex Luger is now discussing the incident during a recent interview with Justin Dhillon of The Wrestling Classic. He says that moment was purely a Vince McMahon decision, and he was following orders as a good foot soldier.

“That would be a Vince McMahon question. He goes, ‘Here’s the belt. I want you to walk out to your music. Not for any reason, because I just want to do it. So I was a good foot soldier and did it. So that’d be a Vince McMahon question.

“It was a small TV show crowd. So that wasn’t really a litmus test. His big test was, like, in The Garden or something. If it was a litmus test, he would have done it somewhere like that. So I just think he wanted it on camera. So whatever decisions he made in the future, he had me on camera with the belt.”

The segment was lost for a time until it was unveiled on the WWE Network as part of the Hidden Gems section of the now-defunct platform.

Lex Luger has said that Vince McMahon never actually promised him the WWE championship. Read more about that here.
