Lio Rush Gives His Side As To What Happened With Konnan And The AAA Cruiserweight Title

Lio Rush offers up his side of the story regarding the AAA Cruiserweight Title.

The AAA Cruiserweight Title situation is a bit of a mess right now as Lio won the belt from Laredo Kid on the February 10 episode of MLW Fusion. AAA's social media team acknowledged the title change, but then used footage of Laredo Kid holding the title to promote events in March. When appearing on recent episodes of AEW Dynamite, Laredo Kid was acknowledged as AAA Cruiserweight Champion.

Dave Meltzer reported in the Wrestling Observer that Rush wasn't supposed to win the AAA Cruiserweight Title and there was a miscommunication with the finish on MLW television. Meltzer reports that the idea was to have Lio go to Mexico to drop the title back, but the dates didn't coincide with his schedule.

Speaking on his Keepin' It 100 podcast, Konnan said, "Every time that Laredo Kid has gone to MLW, almost every time, he's done a job. My whole thing with Laredo was, 'if you're going to use him, use him right or don't use him at all because you're damaging something that we're investing a lot of time into.' They agreed. [Had the conversation with Court Bauer]. We didn't get into details, I just said, 'If you're going to use him, protect him. If not, don't use him.' He probably didn't even notice because he has to make sure his contracted talent is happy, which I get. At the end of the day, we decided to do a series between Lio Rush and Laredo Kid. He went over there and [Lio beat him], then Lio went to Mexico and in some TV tapings that we had, [Lio] lost the title, but we haven't shown that match. The problem is, we need to announce it before the match goes out because he's showing up with his belt everywhere and people are confused. Our relationship with MLW and Court is excellent,"

LuchaBlog reported that Lio had not been used on AAA tapings since TripleMania.

Lio Rush has now given his side of the story.

Lio stated that he and Konnan agreed it was a mistake on MLW's part and they would work to fix the situation the right way. However, Konnan sent Lio text messages that tried to use his past reputation against him, which upset Lio.

Lio said he suggested they do a rematch and his schedule was never a factor in trying to put the match together. The story proposed to him was that the referee made a mistake in the match, which Lio declined. As a result, AAA decided to just have Laredo Kid act as though nothing changed and he would remain AAA Cruiserweight Champion.
