Lio Rush discusses his time working with Bobby Lashley.
Although some fans knew of Lio Rush when he was first signed by WWE in 2017, many people would argue that Lio Rush became a household name as a result of his run with Bobby Lashley in 2018-2019. During this run, Rush was able to work with the likes of Finn Balor, Braun Strowman, and Elias.
While speaking with Chris Van Vliet for a new interview, Rush talked about what he learned, or rather what he was reminded of, while working with Bobby Lashley on weekly television.
“I think the biggest thing that I got reminded of… I give all of the praise and props in the world to my late trainer AJ Meyer, who passed away unfortunately to Leukemia. But he used to tell me all the time, as well as another trainer of mine, that this business is a marathon not a sprint. I would always replay that quote in my head. I knew what it meant, but I feel like I had to go through something in wrestling to truly understand what that meant. I think being with Bobby, seeing the things that he accomplished and seeing that he left WWE and came back and is still flourishing in a healthy career, showed me that it’s a marathon. It’s all about longevity and getting the most out of what you’re presented because it might not always be like that. I feel like I definitely made the most out of being a manager for Bobby. I feel like it helped me in so many ways that I wasn’t thinking about or going into it, not realizing that this was gonna help my talking so much. I was never a promo guy on the independent circuit before getting signed, I was just the young kid. It’s the new kid, look what he can do in the ring. I mean, I could talk, I wasn't stumbling over my words or anything like that but I wasn’t making people feel anything. I didn’t really feel like I had a voice. I feel like being in WWE and being so attached and invested into a specific character helped me find a voice or showed me how to find a certain voice.”
