Matt Cardona: I Signed My WWE Contract With My GCW Title On My Lap

When Matt Cardona was released by WWE in April 2020, he reinvented himself from Zack Ryder by taking any and every independent booking.

Cardona’s most notable indie booking was GCW, where he competed in a deathmatch against Nick Gage and won the GCW World Title. Cadona participating in a deathmatch was a 180 from his Zack Ryder persona, and kicked his independent run into high gear.

On January 2nd, Cardona officially returned to WWE as the character he established on the indie scene.

“When I signed my WWE contract, I signed it with my GCW title on my lap. If it wasn’t for GCW, I wouldn’t be the Indie God. If I wasn’t the Indie God, I wouldn’t be back in WWE. I firmly believe that. When I got fired, I looked at that picture of me and my dad at WrestleMania and when I got rehired, I was holding that GCW Title. I’m very sentimental about that,” he said on the Major Wrestling Figure podcast.

Cardona held the GCW Title for 42 days before losing it to Jon Moxley.

Elsewhere during the interview, Cardona detailed when his WWE deal came together. You can find his full comments.
