Matt Cardona is the King of the Deathmatch.
Cardona made a big impact on Game Changer Wrestling at GCW Homecoming 2021 when he defeated Nick Gage in a deathmatch to win the GCW World Championship. He would eventually lose the title to Jon Moxley, who held the title for over a year.
Despite Moxley's reign, Cardona questions just how much Moxley meant to CGW.
"I stuck around. I am the reason that GCW sold out the Hammerstein Ballroom. I will say that, if I didn't go to GCW for the Nick Gage deathmatch, that momentum would not have been started that led to Hammerstein. I will 100% say that. That's a shoot, not me being in gimmick. That match trended number one, over the Olympics, over UFC that night. Moxley comes in, wins the title, doesn't do anything with it. He's never trending when he does the deathmatch stuff. I understand, it's cool, 'The AEW guy is champ.' He's not doing anything for the company. What did he do for the company?" Cardona questioned while speaking to Sam Roberts on Not Sam Wrestling.
He continued by saying, "Something I did for GCW. Give them a wedding, there's never been a GCW wedding. I did it for the GCW Universe, they've probably never been to a nice wedding in their life. I brought it to the Showboat. Then Nick Gage comes out, destroyed me, pizza cutter my mom was hysterically crying backstage because there is blood oozing out of my face. Chelsea's dress is destroyed, covered in blood and cake. That's something I did for the GCW Universe and I feel like I don't get respect."
The wedding between Cardona and Chelsea Green took place at GCW Homecoming 2022.
When asked about a potential rematch with Gage, Cardona said, "How do you top that first match? You don't do it again at the Showboat Casino. If you did it at Hammerstein, they don't let you do stuff like that. Where do you do a match like that? I'm not doing it on the fucking Jersey Boardwalk like they just did against Moxley. So, I retired as King."
Gage regained the GCW World Title from Moxley at GCW Fight Club 2022.
