Matt Hardy: It'd Be Fun To Have 'Broken' Matt vs. John Cena, John Was A Big Fan Of The Gimmick

John Cena in the Broken Hardy universe? Matt Hardy would like to see it.

In 2016, Matt Hardy took a chance. He banked on his creativity by creating the broken universe, a wacky world in which Matt Hardy, Jeff Hardy, and all of their family could be involved and expand upon the characters of Matt and Jeff Hardy in the wrestling world in ways that they hadn't previously.

The climax of the early days of "Broken" Matt Hardy was his cinematic showdown with his brother in IMPACT Wrestling. Dubbed "The Final Deletion," Matt and Jeff Hardy had a memorable fight on their property, called the Hardy compound, and a phenomenon was born.

Not only were fans captivated by what they saw during the summer of 2016, but professional wrestlers were also. John Cena hosted special screenings of the event as WWE was on tour in Japan when Chris Jericho received an advanced copy of the match.

Speaking on the latest episode of The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy podcast, Matt stated that he would like to get the opportunity to work with John Cena as his "Broken" alter ego. Furthermore, Matt noted that John Cena was rooting for Matt Hardy to play the character when he and Jeff returned to WWE in 2017.

"Oh, boy. It would be fun to do 'Broken' Matt with John Cena,'" Matt replied when asked which character he would like to have faced John with as part of a World Championship rivalry. "He was one of the ones whenever I sent a preview of The Final Deletion to [Chris] Jericho, they were in Japan, and there is a very famous story; Jericho showed it to John Cena, and John said, 'Oh my God, this is the greatest thing I've ever seen in my life. They started setting up different times — they were at this venue all day. So they said, like, '1:00, 2:30, 4:00, 5:30… These are the showing times, you have to be here on time, and if you show up two seconds late, you don't come in the room.' So they showed it throughout the day to the WWE guys, and John Cena watched every viewing of it.

"That was one of the first things — he was so happy whenever I showed back up. He's like, 'Oh my God! I hope you get to do 'Broken' Matt here. I love that,'" Matt recalled.
