At RevPro Summer Sizzler 2024 in the lead up to AEW All In, MJF would head to Will Ospreay’s home promotion to defend the AEW American Championship against Undisputed British Heavyweight Champion Michael Oku. Following his win at the event, MJF would try to hit Amira with the Tiger Driver, but was prevented by Ospreay.
While speaking to TheFiveMarks in a new interview, Michael Oku revealed that his bout at RevPro Summer Sizzler 2024 was MJF’s idea.
“Yeah no that was, I was just trying my best to just kind of keep it quiet. I think being so excited in my heart. I’ve really got to keep this quiet. I’ve got to wait for the announcement. That was hard more than anything. I was ready for it. Again, he for sure wanted to do that match because it would help him with his build with Will Ospreay in the lead-up to Wembley Stadium. But again, it’s just a flattering comment of a compliment, really, that he wanted the match. This wasn’t… again, I feel like there’s some people that might think Oh, maybe Tony Khan- A, Tony Khan is bank rolling RevPro and is actually secretly in charge of RevPro and he can do it when he wants with the promotion. Then B, he’s told MJF that you must go and wrestle at RevPro to further your story with Will. No, this was all MJF’s idea. He just got the green light to do it, but it was his idea. He was like, I want to wrestle Michael Oku. I want to do it at RevPro and I want to do it at York Hall, Bethnal Green, because he’s worked for RevPro in the past. He enjoyed working with Andy and enjoyed wrestling with your call. He was already aware of my stuff. I know that to be true because we exchanged some text messages pre-pandemic. So he’s got his finger on the pulse whether he wants to admit it or not.”
