Mick Foley and Edge discuss the importance of “WrestleMania Moments.”
From Hulk Hogan slamming Andre The Giant in 1987 to Shawn Michaels gliding down the zipline at WrestleMania 12, Superstars don't only want to have the best match at WrestleMania they want to have a moment that solidifies their legacy and can live forever in a highlight reel.
During the build to their match at WrestleMania 22, 2006, Edge routinely made fun of Mick Foley for not having a career-defining WrestleMania moment and up to that point, never having won a match at WrestleMania.
Mick Foley would respond by creating a WrestleMania moment that would in fact live in several highlight reels as he was speared through a flaming table by Edge in the closing moments of the Hardcore Match on April 2, 2006, in Chicago, Illinois.
Speaking on the WWE Untold special surrounding the match, both Mick Foley and Edge spoke about what they feel in their heart is most important about a WrestleMania moment and Mick Foley jokingly put the blame on Shawn Michaels for even making WrestleMania moments a standalone goal of their own during WrestleMania’s biggest week.
“All of this is Shawn Michaels fault,” Foley joked. “. Michaels, I think, really put a lot of emphasis on that need to have a defining WrestleMania moment. I started almost feeling like I could hear the whispers behind my back, ‘Foley never had a magic WrestleMania moment.’ So, as far as I was concerned, I did not have that exclamation point and I needed it, bad.”
Edge added, “The WrestleMania moment, it’s trying to catch lightning in a bottle because you know that moment, if you catch it, that moment will be replayed well after you’re gone.”
Mick Foley would share a WrestleMania moment in 2016 with Shawn Michaels. Michaels, Foley, and Steve Austin would celebrate with The New Day after dispatching of the League of Nations.
