Mick Foley explains which of his characters was the easiest to portray and which was the most difficult.
At the height of his career, Mick Foley was best known for portraying three characters simultaneously. Mankind, Cactus Jack, and Dude Love had different personalities, forcing Mick to tap into other sides of his life experiences. Still, the question remains: Who was the toughest character for "The Hardcore Legend" to portray?
In a new interview with Denise Salcedo, recorded at Comic Con Revolution in Ontario, California, Foley reveals that he initially found the original Mankind character the most difficult to tap into because it forced him to enter a very dark place in his mind. He also says he would go into a boiler room to tap into the character's psyche. On the flip side, he says Dude Love was the easiest to perform because he had to act more nerdy than he did in real life.
"Well, Dude Love was the easiest because it's just me being a little nerdier than I am in real life. Mankind was the toughest because it was a really dark character. In 1996, it was really dark, and it was tough for me to go to a dark place. I mean, literally, I would go to the boiler room to try to get into the character of Mankind."
Of course, in 1998, the Mankind character introduced Mr. Socko, a literal sock puppet, which helped soften the character's edges and make it more of a family-friendly comedic role until the end of his full-time run as a wrestler in 2000.
Mick Foley hasn't competed since the 2012 WWE Royal Rumble. He briefly considered training for one final match but ultimately decided against it for his health.
