Mick Foley reveals one of his only pet peeves with modern wrestling.
Mick Foley is an excellent example of evolution in professional wrestling. He was often criticized by traditionalists who came before him for his hardcore wrestling style. Most notably, Ric Flair told Foley that he would be in a wheelchair by the age of 30. As such, he understands how performers' mindsets can change with every generation. Still, Foley believes some elements of modern professional wrestling could be better.
During an appearance on the Two-Man Power Trip of Wrestling podcast, Mick Foley said he wishes today's wrestlers would learn that there's more than one way to have a "good match." Foley was discussing a live event match he had during the UK tour against Bret Hart and said that he wishes he had a copy of the match so that today's wrestlers could study it and learn that unique matches can be good in their own way.
"I had one with Bret Hart. It was unconventional. We worked backwards, if that makes any sense. We didn't go from start to finish, we went from finish to start. It was unusual, and it was effective. I wish I had a copy of it, just so I could see why it worked, and so that other people might study it and realize there's more than one way to have a great match. That's my only pet peeve about today's product: fans have come to believe there's only one way to have a great match.
"I don't believe that. It would take a handful of people to defy the prevailing winds and go in a different direction. So, I think there should be a reminder every once in a while that not every great match has to look the same."
As for Mick Foley's favorite match of his career, he believes the match he had with Randy Orton at WWE Backlash in 2004 was his best match ever. Learn more about that here.
Bret Hart recently became one of the first competitors to have a match of his inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame. He and Steve Austin were honored in 2025 for their Submission Match from WrestleMania 13 in 1997. Learn more about that here.
