Mick Foley On Tack Spot At Royal Rumble 2000: I Thought, Okay, I Could Lose An Eye, But Imagine The Pop

Mick Foley recalls his historic thumbtack spot from the 2000 Royal Rumble pay-per-view.

Many fans will argue that Foley had the greatest match of his career that night, as he faced Triple H in a Street Fight for the WWF Championship. During the final moments of the bout, Foley cemented his name in history once again, as he took a Pedigree from Triple H onto a pile of thumbtacks.

While appearing on a recent episode of Hot Ones, Foley was asked to explain his risk/reward analysis that he uses when it comes to dangerous spots during wrestling matches. In response, Foley recalled that Vince McMahon didn't want the two to use thumbtacks in their match. Foley also recalled that he was scared of potentially losing an eye while taking the Pedigree onto the thumbtacks, but ultimately decided to do it for the pop.

“It’s the instantaneous risk reward analysis. I think it was a god given gift that would tell me — So, January 2000, just a few blocks away at Madison Square Garden. I remember Mr McMahon saying to me and Triple H, ‘No thumb tacks.’ As soon as Mr. McMahon walked away, Triple H goes, ‘You put them under the ring already?’, and I said, ‘Yeah, I got it taken care of.’ This was one the last matches of my career and so it was a big moment. I just saw that majestic pile, there were five or six thousand tacks, and I thought about the wisdom of taking that pedigree face first into those thumbtacks. I came to the conclusion that, okay, I could lose an eye, but imagine the pop. [laughs].”

Foley is currently retired from professional wrestling, as he last wrestled in 2011. Fans can keep up-to-date with the wrestling legend by following him on social media.
