Hiroshi Tanahashi captured the vacant IWGP United States Championship at NJPW Wrestling Dontaku, defeating Tomohiro Ishii. Tanahashi was scheduled to face Will Ospreay after SANADA vacated the belt due to injury, but Ospreay had to miss the match due to COVID.

The finish saw Tanahashi hit a top tope cross body followed by a high fly flow to put away Ishii.

After the match, Chase Owens came out to distract Tanahashi. leading to a masked man jumping him. The masked man turned out to be Juice Robinson, who officially joined Bullet Club.

This marks the third reign as IWGP US Champion for Tanahashi. SANADA held the belt for 49 days before vacating it.

Robinson previously said he was finished with NJPW at the end of April and had no urge to wrestle.
