Nick Offerman Says He Read Bret Hart’s And Mick Foley’s Memoirs In Prep For ‘Margo’s Got Money Troubles’

Nick Offerman plays Jinx, a former pro wrestler, in the new series “Margo’s Got Money Troubles.”
Taking on the challenge of being a pro wrestler is no easy task on a television set, but Offerman made sure to do his research.
“I was in the gym for a few months leading up to the shooting. I went to see some wrestling downtown with the director and read Bret Hart’s memoir and Mick Foley’s memoir, and got really into looking at all the different looks and gimmicks and characters that wrestlers have had over the years. It was a wonderful permission that Jinx’s heyday was 30 years ago because that allowed us to be a lot more campy. All of that combined gave me a good starting place. They gave me three weeks of training with Chavo, and he brought a handful of other wrestlers. Everybody was so generous,” Offerman told Chris Jericho on Talk is Jericho regarding his preparation for the role.
Offerman trained with Chavo Guerrero for the series and previously choreographed fight scenes on stage, giving him some experience in putting combat together.
“I spent three weeks with them. It was really intense. They did a great job of letting me take babysteps. It wasn’t until the last week that I was climbing up to the top rope. If I was younger, I would have been more stupid and hurt myself, somehow. I’m old enough that I listened to them and I didn’t try to do anything past what the teacher said. That allowed them to trust me and eventually fly off the top rope. It was so fun. Never again will I watch any wrestling without remembering how brutal it is. People make a big deal over the showmanship or that it’s not based in reality. It’s certainly a combination of showbiz and sport, but the sport part is pretty damn real. I ended up with ribs out of place. It’s a hats off to what you guys do. It’s incredible,” he said.
Jericho is also part of the series, playing himself. The series is now streaming on Apple TV.
