Before McGuinness began working as a commentator for WWE, he was one of the most popular and respected wrestlers on the Independent scene. McGuinness worked in ROH from 2003 to 2009. During his six-year run with the company, McGuinness won the ROH World and Pure Titles. His feud with Daniel Bryan is often cited as one of the best ROH feuds of all-time and produced a number of classic bouts between the two.

McGuinness agreed to a deal with WWE in 2009, but failed a pre-screening physical test as a result of a biceps injury. With WWE off the table, he signed with TNA/IMPACT Wrestling. McGuinness retired from in-ring competition in 2011, citing a positive test for Hepatitis B as the reason for his retirement. He has since been cured of the disease.
